Domiciliary Care or Live-in Care?
Choosing support at home starts with the person’s routine, preferences and the help they need. This guide compares visiting care with live-in care and sets out questions to discuss before deciding.

How the arrangements differ
Domiciliary care involves planned visits at home. Live-in care involves a carer living in the home as part of an agreed care arrangement. Both should be planned around individual needs.
A live-in arrangement does not mean one person works continuously, day and night. Discuss overnight needs, rest periods and cover separately before agreeing a plan.
Start with a typical day
Write down the moments when help would make a difference. Include mornings, meals, personal care, time alone and evenings. Ask the person which routines they want to keep and which tasks they would welcome support with.
Use this daily picture when comparing the two options. A service name alone does not tell you whether the proposed arrangement covers everything that matters.
Questions for your first conversation
- Which tasks need help, and at what times?
- What support is already provided by relatives or other professionals?
- How will changes in the person’s needs be discussed?
- What happens during a carer’s breaks, holidays or absence?
- What is included in the quote, and what costs extra?
- For live-in care, what accommodation and household arrangements are needed?
Compare the plan, not just the price
Put each proposed arrangement beside the same list of needs. Note the agreed times, responsibilities, overnight arrangements, charges and contact person. Ask for any unclear points to be explained before making a commitment.
If needs are more involved, ask whether complex care support should be considered during assessment. Clinical tasks require appropriate professional involvement and an agreed scope of support.
